He also appears in the Kingdom Hearts video game series as the chronicler of Sora's travels, writing journals and keeping a cast list of the figures they meet, friend or foe. In the original Kingdom Hearts, he has some direct involvement with characters and elements based on the film Pinocchio. He has a substantially bigger part in the sequel, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, frequently talking to Sora and offering advice. His role in Kingdom Hearts II is smaller than in the first game, only making an appearance in one cutscene. In Kingdom Hearts coded, he finds a message in his journal he didn't write back at Disney Castle; to solve this, he and King Mickey digitize the contents of the note, awakening a virtual Sora. He is transported into the Data world halfway through the game, but presumably sent back to the real world along with the others at the end. He also starred in the first significant body of animation the Disney studio produced specifically for TV — a long series of segments for The Mickey Mouse Club, in which he imparted knowledge to the show's young viewers about books, nature, safety, or life in general. Many of these were animated by Jim Davis, best known for drawing The Fox & the Crow for DC Comics. As far as production values go, these segments far outshine Tom Terrific, Ruff & Reddy and other contemporary non-Disney TV toons — but they didn't make as big a hit with audiences; and they look pretty cheesy compared to Disney's other animation. Jiminy was introduced in Disney's second feature, Pinocchio, released Feb. 23, 1940. He represented a character identified in author Carlo Collodi's original book version only as "the talking cricket", and served as Pinoke's conscience — a role that got him righteously squashed in the book, but catapulted him to stardom in animation. Jiminy was designed by master animator Ward Kimball at the direction of Disney himself, who thought there was something missing from the Pinocchio film as it was originally proposed. Apparently, Jiminy was it, because many commentators think he pretty much stole the movie. The Cricket's voice was provided by Cliff "Ukelele Ike" Edwards, a minor radio actor of the 1930s and '40s who is best remembered for this role. Mickey Mouse and Goofy were in two each during the 1940s and Donald Duck was in three, but they all rose to stardom in the cartoon shorts. Other than José Carioca, who, in the U.S. at least, took a straight road to near-oblivion after co-starring with Donald in Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros and making a walk-on in Melody Time, Jiminy is the only feature-original to appear in more than one during Disney's lifetime. His other role in theatrically-released features was as the announcer in Fun & Fancy Free, released Sept. 27, 1947. Jiminy Cricket is a character from the Disney movie "Pinocchio". In it, the Blue Fairy magically gives him intelligence in order to act as Pinocchio's conscience. He guides Pinocchio and helps him stay out of trouble. He appears in all three "KIngdom Hearts" videogames, chronicling Sora's travels in his Journal. He provides the information on all the Disney and Final Fantasy characters there. He appears as a guest in "House of Mouse". He is the Ghost of Christmas Past in "Mickey's Christmas Carol". After Edwards's death, Eddie Carroll replaced him as the voice actor for Jiminy. Carroll died in 2010. The third voice actor for Jiminy, Phil Snyder, began voicing him on May 19, 2010 in the Kingdom Hearts video game series. Jiminy Cricket is the Walt Disney version of "The Talking Cricket" (Italian: Il Grillo Parlante), a fictional character created by Carlo Collodi for his classic novel Pinocchio, which was adapted into an animated film by Walt Disney in 1940. Originally an unnamed, minor character in Collodi's novel, he was translated in the Disney version into a comical and wise partner who accompanies Pinocchio on his adventures, having been appointed by the Blue Fairy to serve as the official conscience for Pinocchio. Since his debut in Pinocchio, he has become a recurring iconic Disney character and has appeared in numerous other instances. His full name is Jiminy H. Cricket as revealed in A Bug's Life. The name of the character is a play on the exclamation--which itself was uttered in Pinocchio's immediate predecessor, 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, while the latter form was spoken in 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Another example occurs in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. When the group first enters the Wizard's chamber, they are startled by the Wizard's sudden thunder-and-lightning display, and Dorothy (Judy Garland) cries, "Oh! Oh! Jiminy Crickets!" (Garland also says the expression in her 1938 film Listen, Darling). It had also been used as an exclamation by the Swedish father several times in the 1930 movie Anna Christie.
